flow

Today's topic is: expression. In the midst of our busy lives, it's hard to keep track of everything. But I feel as though one of the most overlooked aspects of our lives tends to be the part of us that seeks release. Expression, in any form, is a vital part of human existence. We continue on allowing the stress & pressure to build and if we don't connect ourselves to some sort of outlet, eventually we'll find that we cave under the pressure of everything.

Expression comes in many forms, although I feel that creative expression is the most fulfilling. Whether it's painting, drawing, writing, craft-making, physical activity, etc, the point is that you use your energy in a positive, non-draining way to fulfill that part of your soul.

So, although it's hard to free up some time for quiet introspection, I encourage everyone to make sure it's a priority and do yourself the favor of releasing all bad tension and negative energy. I promise it'll strengthen your quality of life and peace of mind.

xx, Nik

iWANT

Here's a few things I've had my eye on lately...
I love the detail in this printed dress by Mary Katranzou. The silhouette of the dress is amazing and touch of flowers at the edge of the dress add a soft feminine feel.

I'm in love with this Rebecca Minkoff bag appropriately named "The Hex." The snake pattern and the hues of blue and tan mesh spectacularly to create a very attractive bag. The theme of shapes such as the triangular piping and square hardware makes this purse truly unique.

These striking sandals are a bold look but contain the most subtle details. Note the strap, the eyelet pattern and the gray snake print used to soften the silver studding and chunky heel.

The meticulously placed sequins and embroidery on this piece is so exquisite. This beautiful, detailed cardigan can make any outfit casual and glamorous at the same time!

Organized-Schm-organized...

source

I am by no means, the most organized. But being in charge of so many aspects of a shop and trying to get everything done in a timely matter... organization should be a top skill!

I have tried all those "to-do list" apps and even the yellow notepad on the iphone. There's nothing better than a good ol' pen and paper to write out everything that's running around in your head. I need to see it on paper to realize what REALLY needs to get done. I believe if you write it down, it does help it to manifest. I carry a pen and small notepad around in my purse, just in case!

So grab a cup of Joe, find somewhere comfy and inspiring, and get going on writing out your dreams, goals, and to-do's!

Happy List-Making,

Puppy Love

Blake Lively and her Maltipoo. Photo courtesy of http://shape.com

If you spend even a small amount of time with me, you will soon find out that I have "puppy fever". Not only that, but its most likely on the same scale that many women have "baby fever"

Big dogs, small dogs, fluffy dogs, spiky dogs, you name it, I want it! I have been known to squeal at a stranger toting a cute four-legged friend; not only frightening the stranger but probably embarrassing my poor husband as well...

Yours truly, with an English Mastiff I stalked in Seattle, WA.

As we speak, I have a puppy calendar hanging on my wall above me. This is serious, people.

Unfortunately, due to busy schedules and the regulations of the townhouse we live in, I am going to have to wait to become a puppy mama.

Though I can be found Googling dog breeds on the daily (for hours!),  and though I already have names picked out, and though I don't want to wait one more minute, I know my dog will be worth waiting for.

I know you're thinking, "what is the deal with this wacko??". Well, here is the deal: I love people, but a dog brings something into the life of this girl that I can't quite put into words. Something about their loyalty, their unconditional love, their need to protect you. Did you know a dog knows when you're sad and never gets tired of being your shoulder to cry on (after you've broken up with the same boyfriend for the 6th time...).? And don't even get me started on puppy-dog eyes.

Dogs become family members. They become companions. We stick through the hard times with them even after they've eaten our Steve Madden shoe or ruined our new carpet. No, they can't replace the best-advice-giving girl friend, but hey, they'll never give you bad advice.

Many girls choose to own a dog tiny enough that it will fit right in their purses (ala Paris Hilton..) and voila! You have the cutest kind of accessory.

According to The Dog Whisperer, Cesar Milan, one is never to treat your dog as if he or she is your child or your soulmate. I have found my soulmate, and one day hope to have children, so I'm fine with that.
All I want is for my future pup to be my confidant, my buddy, my exercise partner, my guardian and an object of my undying affection.

That's okay, right Cesar? *wink*

The young Carrie Bradshaw

I would like to start off by saying…. THANK GOODNESS IT'S FRIDAY! On top of that, (T)his (G)irl (I)s (F)abulous!! ----> ANNA SOPHIA ROBB

This Marc Jacobs sweater took a class in optical illusions. Robb keeps chic and sweet with a Jennifer Behr headband.
Mixing verticals and horizontals with Marc Jacobs sweater and skirt. Sixties throwback meets the new millennium with metallic Jimmy Choo shoes.

Robb goes classic retro in a Louis Vuitton top and miniskirt. Embellished with a girl’s best friend necklace, from Elsa Peretti for Tiffany & Co., of course.
From Teen Vogue. Photographed by Jason Kibbler for Teen Vogue.

Okay, so if you have not heard of the new "dramedy" series on CW, "The Carrie Diaries," it is actually a prequel of "Sex and the City." Fan or not of the SATC, "The Carrie Diaries" is worth watching on its own merit. It's clever, entertaining, charming, and just magnifique!

Anna Sophia, (from "Soul Surfer") plays the roll of young Carrie Bradshaw in a 1984 scene in Connecticut. She is 16-years-old, who is living with her widowed, loving, and quite overprotective father; and younger sister, Doritt - completely opposite from Carrie. Her father, with the connections he has in Manhattan, helped Carrie get into an internship at a law firm. This is when she quickly fell in love with the city. The city - with its own world full of fun, stylish, free, and open-minded people, Carrie knew she belonged. While juggling school, dating the cutest boy, trying to get through the internship to earn her a school credit, being a good daughter and sister, she also has three dedicated best friends who are there with her as she is trying to find herself.
Although it is acclaimed to be a teen and young adult soap, after watching the first episode I could not wait for the second one to air. The 80's music, art, and fashion they portrayed made me feel nostalgic in a way. I was intrigued by the love and fervor she had for fashion at a young age - something I can absolutely relate to.
Carrie and her sister fought over who should keep the purse that their mother, who recently passed away, left behind. After noticing that Dorrit accidentally splattered nail polish on it, Carrie had a choice to either let it go - or make it something of her own. She hastily turned the purse into life by adding a few touches of other colored nail polish; and finishing it off with her name. Larissa, who she met right away on her first day in Manhattan, is the fashion editor at Interview Magazine - and wanted nothing but to feature Carrie's purse in a photo shoot. Carrie's dreams were coming into reality.
If you missed the first two episodes, you can watch it online on this link:
Quote of the day: “The most important thing to remember is that you can wear all the greatest clothes and all the greatest shoes, but you’ve got to have a good spirit on the inside. That’s what’s really going to make you look like you’re ready to rock the world.”
—Alicia Keys

Until next time!

Friends don't let friends wear mommy jeans...or do we?

If your a good friend you won't let this happen. Remember... Beverly Hills 90210. First episode was October 1990! 1990 people. Friends don't let friends wear mommy jeans....or do we?
These Gap jeans almost accentuate the fullness of the lower abdomen, called the FUPA. Not cute (frown)....unless....you upcycle them. The 90's are back I say, and mommy's jeans can be quite sexy.
Reworking your old relaxed fit jeans into frayed shorts are so on trend. Perfect wear into the summer. Rihanna has embraced the 90's creating updated looks for today.
Come try on the latest reworked highwaisted and midwaisted shorts by myself "CHIEF" here at Milieu Hawaii. You'll be quite impressed with the look and fit, and not so self conscious of the FUPA. Love Love, CHIEF

James Jean Art & Designs

I recently discovered one of my new favorite artists via Instagram, James Jean. He’s a Taiwanese American artist who has been showcasing his art in galleries and winning prestigious awards for his work since 2000.

These images are from his site http://www.jamesjean.com/sketch/
"Carrier"

"Nervosa"

He can mold multiple mediums; from drawing to painting to digital and cover art. Here are a few of his illustrations with ink and paper. His illustrations seem like a crazy acid trip... And I mean that in the best way possible. I enjoy seeing the random characters and colors, each one thoughtfully and intricately placed among the paper.

Mole E

Mole B
His art makes me feel like I’m in a dream, sometimes another realm, his characters are so life-like that you can relate to the emotions drawn, his art makes one feel as if the thoughts in his head are oozing onto the mediums he morphs. And it is amazing. I especially like the continuing theme of nature; animals, plants and humans. You really have to look closely to take every detail in.

Some of his special projects include wallpaper and fabric prints for Prada’s S/S 2008 collection and an animated film, Trembled Blossoms.

He has worked with other mediums such as metals for jewelry as well. Truly a talented artist who is in tune with his creativity.

The One

After spending this weekend working at the Hawaii Bridal Expo, I have come to a realization. In regards to love, we women have to search not once, but twice for "the one." This is not meant to be disheartening. In fact, it is meant to inform you of the exciting fact that there are two "ones" out there waiting for you! (Married gals, sit back, relax, love your husband,  nd be there to cheer on those in the midst of finding true love!)

For most women, your love story may look a little like this: First, we wait to be swept off our feet and tossed onto a white horse by the love of our lives. However, after the pony ride has ended, and Prince Charming has gotten down on one knee, we once again find ourselves face to face with yet another search.

Do you know where I'm going with this?

That's right.

It's the dress.

The wedding dress.

The next biggest commitment you will make as a bride-to-be, after saying "yes" to your fiancé (squeal!)

The one most important garment that will accompany you in your shining moment as a bride.

The one piece of clothing you will not settle on.

The aspect of your wedding that you will think about for days.

The only time you will return to the store to try the same thing on, over and over again (and that's ok!).

The one thing in your closet you'll try on over and over again before its public debut (and that's ok!).

The one item which will never be returned (not because most sales are final, but because once you have it, you won't want to part with it).

The one purchase which will never end up in your "Goodwill pile"

The one. The dress. The most beautiful piece of clothing you will ever wear. Making you the most beautiful girl your groom has ever seen.

(Bride is styled with accessories from Milieu!)

As I stated earlier, I spent the weekend meeting brides and grooms at the Hawaii Bridal Expo. I was filled with joy as I spoke to a variety of different brides. They were young, they were...ahem...less young. They were tall, they were short. They were petite, they were curvy. They were traditional, they were off-beat. They were all a little stressed. They were all a little blissful.

What made me so happy about these brides is that, as different as each one was, I just knew there was a bridal gown out there perfect for each of these lovely ladies. No longer does each girl need to try on the same style A-line gown that her best friend wore the previous year (unless she wants to, A-line remains the Queen of Flattery for every body type). No longer does a bride have one color choice (white) and one choice of length (floor).

No matter if you're a Mermaid Princess or an apple-chomping Snow White, there's a dress out there just for you, princess.

Here are a few of my favorites for 2013

Hey all!

So for this post, I just want to talk about Zooey Deschanel because she's super cute! I absolutely love her brunette locks and her big blue eyes, but I'm really digging her fashion sense. Doesn't hurt that she has a pretty smooth voice!

It seems that her look is very 50's-60's inspired, and she fits into those eras right down to her music.
Her little cocktail dresses, high waist skirts, and pea coats are just so darned cute. Take a look and tell me what you think!
xoxo,
Analiese
